IERM is organizing a study mission for legislators and policy makers to Germany and Belgium for 2022. The first stop will be Berlin, where participants will learn from their counterparts about key waste management legislation and policies. These sessions will be coupled with field trips, where attendees will see sustainable practices in action, and will gain an in-depth understanding of why moving away from landfilling of municipal solid waste has resulted in lower fees for citizens than those in the US.

From Berlin, participants will travel to Brussels, headquarters of the European Union. There, they will have discussions with EU legislators and policy makers on why moving away from landfilling is a critical component in the development of a circular economy, and how it leads to economic Gains and environmental sustainability.

This is a “must attend”event for legislators, policy makers, and anyone interested in protecting our air, water and soil. For more information, please click here, and please consider a tax-deductible contribution to support out work.

Following up from the March 28th presentation about waste, there were many questions about Waste-to-Energy (WTE) and the climate and environmental implications. This discussion with Philipp Schmidt-Pathmann was a dedicated follow-up discussion focused completely on WTE. This Q&A style session (with a 15-minute introductory overview) was structured so you can learn more about technology, functionality, integration, planning, and everything that you wanted to know about thermal treatment of waste.

Waste-to-Energy is a critical component of the accepted municipal waste management hierarchy and can be a significant tool to avoid landfilling waste after reduction, reuse and recycling. This report summarizes how WTE is a key part of a sustainable waste management solution and a responsible alternative when environmental and human health impacts are considered. Details are provided on the performance of WTE facilities, with a focus on the U.S., and the complementary relationship between recycling and WTE. Representative publications are presented and summarized with citations to allow interested readers to fully explore the extensive body of literature pertaining to performance and operation of WTE. https://ccnyeec.org/wp-content/uploads/2021/05/WTE-REPORT7603.pdf
